Domain Name Facts
We are frequently asked about website domain names and how the system
of registration works – hopefully here are some answers!
• A domain name is the unique name that
identifies an website.
• You can purchase domain names on-line for
as little as £1 - £20 for two years.
• The Registrant is then the owner of that name
and no-one else can use it.
• Nominet UK (http://www.nominet.org.uk) holds
the registry for .uk internet domain names.
• Nominet publish a search facility on their
website called WHOIS. You can search before
you purchase a domain name to see if it has
been taken by someone else.
• You can also use WHOIS to check who has
registered a name and obtain their address
details.
• Currently there are nearly 3.8 million .uk
domain names on the register!
